Unit 3: Russia

Learning Team Activity

The purpose of Learning Team Activities is to add depth to our understanding about important topics in geography. While each individual focuses on a singular topic, the idea is that these teams serve as online communities where students discuss and add value to their collective knowledge. Students should read their teammates’ work and leave comments that ask questions, add insight, make connections, or otherwise support learning in some way.

Select one of the following missions by claiming it on your learning team blog. Complete the mission to the best of your ability and share your work with the team on the blog.

(1) Russia’s Physical Features (1-2 person mission, claimed by: Arin and Maddie )

  • Scan 14.1 and 14.2 for information about Russia physical geography.
  • Choose the top ten physical or climatic features for Russia in terms of the role they played in shaping Russia’s development as a cultural region. This can include landforms, water features, or even weather-related features.
  • For each feature, include a picture, a description, and an explanation as to why it is significant to Russia’s development. Consider whether the feature was conducive to settlement, isolation, invasion, etc. You may need to do additional research to learn more about each feature in order write a good description/explanation.
  • Set one of your pictures as the feature picture to represent European physical geography on the learning team home page.
  • After your top-ten list, include honorable mentions, which do not require pictures or descriptions.
  • At the bottom of your post, cite your sources, which should include your book and links to your pictures as well as any other sources used. Use MLA format.

(2) Russia’s Historical Influences (2-3 person mission, claimed by: Adrianne)

  • Scan the “History and Government” section (15.2) to compile a list of important events that helped shape Russia as a region.
  • Collaborating on timetoast.com, list historical events. On timetoast.com, one person must be in charge of setting up the timeline and inputting all of the data.
  • For each event, include a picture, a date or range of dates, a description of the event, and a statement of how the event influenced the region.
  • Consider, specifically, which events may have pushed Russia toward communism.
  • On your learning team page, post a short description of your timeline, a screen shot, and a link to your timeline. You should include a highlight from your timeline that you consider particularly relevant.

(3) Russia Culture (1-2 person mission, claimed by: W. Baker, Stephany Li)

  • Scan the “Population and Culture” section (15.1) for information about important cultural features of Russia.
  • Choose the top ten most significant cultural features of Russia. Features may be from the visual arts, literature, education, healthcare, music, recreation, or any other aspect of culture.
  • For each feature, include a picture, a description, and an explanation as to why it is important. Consider, specifically, how culture helps define this cultural region. You may need to do additional research to learn more about each feature in order write a good description/ explanation.
  • Set one of your pictures as the feature picture to represent Russian culture on the learning team home page.
  • After your top-ten list, include honorable mentions, which do not require pictures or descriptions.
  • At the bottom of your post, cite your sources, which should include your book and links to your pictures as well as any other sources used. Use MLA format.

(4) Perspective: Influence of the Soviet Era on Russian Society (1 person mission, claimed by: Mitch Ross)

  • Scan sections 15.1, 15.2, and 16.1 for information about the Soviet Union and its impact on Russia.
  • Write an article that explains the Soviet era’s influence on Russia. You may need to do additional research to better understand this topic.
  • Be sure to answer the following questions:
    • When was the Soviet era? What were its defining features?
    • What brought an end to the Soviet era?
    • How are Russia’s current society, politics, and culture influenced by the shadow of the Soviet Union? Consider the good and the bad.
    • How is Russia currently dealing with the problems left by the Soviet Union?
    • To what degree has Russia removed itself from the shadow of the Soviet Union? To what degree is it still operating under the same paradigm?
  • Insert a picture at the top of the page that adds meaning to your post, and set it as your feature picture.
  • Use at least three sources. At the bottom of your post, cite your sources, which should include your book and a link to your picture as well as any other sources used. Use MLA format.

(5) Perspective: Chechnya’s Struggle for Independence (1 person mission, claimed by: Madeline)

  • Scan sections 15.1, 16.1, and the special insert about Nationalism in Chechnya on pp. 376 – 377 for information about Chechnya’s relationship with Russia.
  • Write an article that explains Chechnya and their relationship with Russia. You will need to do additional research to better understand this topic.
  • Be sure to answer the following questions:
    • Where is Chechnya and what are its characteristics? Who lives there?
    • What is Chechnya’s relationship with Russia? What is the status of Chechnya’s sovereignty?
    • What is the cause of conflict in this region?
    • Why does Russia refuse to let Chechnya break away and form its own country? What does oil have to do with this conflict?
    • What is the current state of this situation?
  • Insert a picture at the top of the page that adds meaning to your post, and set it as your feature picture.
  • Use at least three sources. At the bottom of your post, cite your sources, which should include your book and a link to your picture as well as any other sources used. Use MLA format.

(6) Perspective: The Soviet Union’s Environmental Legacy (1 person mission, claimed by: Braylon Smith  )

  • Scan sections 16.1 for information about the Soviet’s environmental legacy.
  • Write an article that explains how the Soviet Union treated environmental issues and how that is still impacting Russia’s environment today. You will need to do additional research to better understand this topic.
  • Be sure to answer the following questions:
    • What is the Soviet Union’s environmental legacy?
    • What are the underlying causes of this legacy? Why did the Soviet Union make the choices it made in regard to its environment?
    • How is the Soviet Union’s legacy most apparent in the environment today? What are the most pressing issues? Consider both the impact on people and the larger environment.
    • Where in Russia are environmental problems most serious? Why?
    • What steps are being taken to combat Russia’s environmental problems?
  • Insert a picture at the top of the page that adds meaning to your post, and set it as your feature picture.
  • Use at least three sources. At the bottom of your post, cite your sources, which should include your book and a link to your picture as well as any other sources used. Use MLA format.
