This ship wheel represents the Buddhist symbol for religion. Southeast Asia is extremely diverse in ethnic groups and religions. Buddhism is the most dominant religion on the mainland of southeast Asia; whereas Islam is most dominant on the islands. Also, the wheel symbolizes the importance of the Maritime culture. Maritimes Southeast Asia includes Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei, and East Timor. The islands of Southeast Asia are also seen as a passageway to migration to new areas. Trade in the islands had an influence on culture in Southeast Asia as well.
The wheel symbolizes all of these things because the people that influenced culture, to migrate to new areas, and to trade, need a ship, and a ship needs a wheel.
